CASES-99 Main Tower Thermocouple Data: ------------------------------------------------- Version 1 ------------------- (Released by MMM/NCAR, 7 Feb 2000) Jielun Sun and Sean P. Burns Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division National Center for Atmospheric Research P.O. Box 3000, Boulder, CO 80307-3000 e-mail: jsun@ucar.edu, sean@ucar.edu Web Page: http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/science/abl/ ------------------ NOTES: *The thermocouple data will be reprocessed after comparisons with the ATD aspirated 1-Hz temperature data are completed (expected to be in March 2000). The absolute values of the resulting temperatures will not change very much. For the nighttime themocouple temperature data there will be an increase of roughly 0.1C at all levels. There may also be a small adjustment to the absolute value of the time stamp of about 0-30 seconds (more details of the time-stamp problem can be found in the document about the thermocouple data processing). By comparisons with the ATD data (which are time stamped with GPS time), the "improved" thermocouple time stamp will be made consistent with GPS time. note added on: 17 March 2000 - SpB. -------------------------------------- During CASES-99 there were 34 levels of thermocouples, 32 on the NCAR ATD main tower and 2 near the ground but slightly offset from the main tower. The 34 levels of thermocouples cover the vertical range of 0.23m to 58.1m. The air temperature observed with the thermocouples were recorded at 5 samples per second (5-Hz). The processed thermocouple data were downsampled to 1 sample per second, and 1 sample per 20 seconds by "picking-off" points from the 5-Hz data. These processed data are available in NetCDF format. These data and more detailed information on instruments and data processing can be found at: http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/science/abl/cases/ If needed, the 5-Hz data are also available (for specific time periods) by contacting either Sean Burns or Jielun Sun. Due to the large size of the 5-Hz data set (~2Gb) these data are not available on-line. We also request that users of the thermocouple data send us an e-mail so we can inform you of any updates and/or changes to these data. Processing Information: ======================= Additional information about the thermocouple instrumentation and data processing can be found in the PostScript document: http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/science/abl/cases/data_thermocouple/readme_tcproc.ps Data Files: =========== These data are saved in netCDF format. More information on netCDF data format can be found at: http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf/ File Naming Convention: tcs_1s_10xx.nc, xx= Day which the file starts (12:00 CDT) Each 1-s file is for 24hrs, from Noon-Noon CDT. e.g., tcs_1s_1004.nc is data from 10/4 12:00 CDT to 10/5 11:59 CDT. (NOTE: in the "global attributes" of each netCDF file the "timeperiod.cst" parameter should be "timeperiod.cdt" and the time shown is CDT, not CST) 20-s Data: 18635404 Feb 7 17:12 s_tcs_20s.nc (entire month of October) 1-s Data: 13313192 Feb 6 22:05 tcs_1s_1002.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:07 tcs_1s_1003.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:09 tcs_1s_1004.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:11 tcs_1s_1005.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:13 tcs_1s_1006.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:15 tcs_1s_1007.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:18 tcs_1s_1008.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:20 tcs_1s_1009.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:30 tcs_1s_1010.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:35 tcs_1s_1011.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:38 tcs_1s_1012.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:40 tcs_1s_1013.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:42 tcs_1s_1014.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:49 tcs_1s_1015.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:51 tcs_1s_1016.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:54 tcs_1s_1017.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:56 tcs_1s_1018.nc 13313192 Feb 6 22:59 tcs_1s_1019.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:01 tcs_1s_1020.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:06 tcs_1s_1021.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:08 tcs_1s_1022.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:11 tcs_1s_1023.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:14 tcs_1s_1024.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:26 tcs_1s_1025.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:29 tcs_1s_1026.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:31 tcs_1s_1027.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:33 tcs_1s_1028.nc 13313192 Feb 6 23:36 tcs_1s_1029.nc Variable List: ============== notes: s1_* = 1-s data, eg, s1_th01, etc s_* = 20-s data, eg, s_th01, etc Decimal Julian Day 1.0 == 1999 January 1, 0:0:0 UTC Sensor Variable Name Height (m) Description Units ------------- ---------- ------------------------ ------ s*_jd - Decimal Julian Day (UTC) - s*_dd - Day (UTC) - s*_hr - Hour (UTC) - s*_mm - Minute (UTC) - s*_ss - Seconds (UTC) - s*_th01 0.23 Thermocouple, Level 1 C s*_th02 0.63 Thermocouple, Level 2 C s*_th03 2.30 Thermocouple, Level 3 C s*_th04 4.10 Thermocouple, Level 4 C s*_th05 5.90 Thermocouple, Level 5 C s*_th06 7.70 Thermocouple, Level 6 C s*_th07 9.50 Thermocouple, Level 7 C s*_th08 11.30 Thermocouple, Level 8 C s*_th09 13.10 Thermocouple, Level 9 C s*_th10 14.90 Thermocouple, Level 10 C s*_th11 16.70 Thermocouple, Level 11 C s*_th12 18.50 Thermocouple, Level 12 C s*_th13 20.30 Thermocouple, Level 13 C s*_th14 22.10 Thermocouple, Level 14 C s*_th15 23.90 Thermocouple, Level 15 C s*_th16 25.70 Thermocouple, Level 16 C s*_th17 27.50 Thermocouple, Level 17 C s*_th18 29.30 Thermocouple, Level 18 C s*_th19 31.10 Thermocouple, Level 19 C s*_th20 32.90 Thermocouple, Level 20 C s*_th21 34.70 Thermocouple, Level 21 C s*_th22 36.50 Thermocouple, Level 22 C s*_th23 38.30 Thermocouple, Level 23 C s*_th24 40.10 Thermocouple, Level 24 C s*_th25 41.90 Thermocouple, Level 25 C s*_th26 43.70 Thermocouple, Level 26 C s*_th27 45.50 Thermocouple, Level 27 C s*_th28 47.30 Thermocouple, Level 28 C s*_th29 49.10 Thermocouple, Level 29 C s*_th30 50.90 Thermocouple, Level 30 C s*_th31 52.70 Thermocouple, Level 31 C s*_th32 54.50 Thermocouple, Level 32 C s*_th33 56.30 Thermocouple, Level 33 C s*_th34 58.10 Thermocouple, Level 34 C
