Instruments deployed in SHOWEX from the LongEZ group 1. 12 thermocouples are installed on the land tower (lat=36.18261, long=-75.75135). Due to the limited lengths of the thermocouple cables, there are more levels at the top of the land tower than at the bottom of the tower. In addition, the orientation of the thermocouples varies at all the levels. Most of them point to NE and NW. There are three thermocouples installed at the highest level. 2. There are two 3-D Campball csat-3. installed at the end of the pier (lat= 36.184, lon=-75.745 ). One is on a 3.12m boom, pointing to 340 Deg. (perpendicular to the pier), and 9.14m above the water. The other one is installed on the tower at the end of the pier at 17.03m above the water, which is about 9.11m above the pier, pointing to 80 deg. The pier top is about 7.92m above the water. The data are recorded 10 samples per second. Instrument tests: Thermocouples: The lower level thermocouples tend to accumulate salt easily. White salt blobs were observed on the thermolcouple sensors at the lowest two levels. In addition, the thermocouple probes at the lower levels were observed wet. The comparison between salt-blob and clean thermocouple data shows that the salt blob thermocouple tends to give large temperature oscillations due to evaporation from the wet thermocouple in response to wind gusts. The comparison among the three thermocouples at the highest level indicates that the direct solar heating has some effect on the thermocouple since one of the thermocouples is in shade sometimes. The solar shelter was added to level 5 thermocouple, and moved next to level 6 thermocouples. The comparison between the two thermocouples, with and without the solar shelter shows the amplitude of the temperature variation observed from the one with the shelter is less than the one without the shelter. All the thermocouples are calibrated in the ice water and in a bottle of distilled water. Temperature differences before and after the cleaning of thermocouples are observed. Sonic anemometers: Friction velocity from two 3-d sonics compare very well based on two-day data although the data are spiky. The result indicates that the flow distortion is not a serious problem if the wind is from N. Smoke bomb tests were done around the pier. The distortion upstream of the triangle tower at the end of the pier is not obvious. The small triangle tower has obvious effects on the flow through the tower. There is more fine turbulence generated due to the structure of the tower.
