Announcement
Antarctic greetings!
A motivation for this workshop is the success of the
first two-year phase of the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System
(AMPS).
AMPS is a real-time mesocale modeling system which
has provided NWP guidance for NSF's Antarctic operations at
McMurdo Station, has served the Italian Antarctic Program's
Terra Nova Bay facility and the GLOBEC (Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics)
field campaign, and has assisted in forecasting
for international Antarctic rescue operations.
While there will be invited speakers at the workshop, short presentations are
welcomed from all who would like to offer ideas on AMPS
and future collaborations in Antarctic mesoscale NWP,
and, in particular, international support of the AMPS effort.
The workshop's sessions are described under the "Workshop Program" link
above and will cover: (a) the AMPS system and its performance;
(b) the forecasting efforts and requirements
of international Antarctic programs; and (c) the possibilities for
collaborations in AMPS by the international
Antarctic scientific and NWP communities.
The main workshop sessions will be:
Registration
To register, click on the "Registration" link above. We would appreciate your registering
as early as possible, as the registration information will be used for workshop
planning purposes. There is no registration fee.
Presentations
We encourage summaries of presentations that registrants might want
to give. This will allow for planning of the program. The presentation request
should include your name, affiliation, title of presentation, and e-mail address,
and it should be sent to anfwkshp@ncar.ucar.edu. The deadline for
submitting a request for an oral presentation is October 11, 2002.
These oral presentations will be allotted 15 min.
Longer, invited talks will also be presented. For the program of speakers
and topics, see the "Workshop Program" link above.
If you would like to do a presentation using Powerpoint, you may bring a
floppy disk or a CD containing it, and we will provide the PC and PC projector.
For information on getting to and around Boulder, please feel free to contact
either of the workshop's NCAR contacts:
Ms. Joan Wilson
and
Ms. Sudie Kelly

The U.S. National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs and
the National Center for Atmospheric Research's Mesoscale and Microscale
Meteorology Division invite
you to attend the Workshop on Antarctic Numerical Weather Forecasting for Operations
at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado.
The workshop is aimed to: (i) review the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction
System and efforts at real-time mesoscale NWP over Antarctica,
and (ii) serve as a forum for the input and suggestions of the international community
with respect to collaboration in the realm of mesoscale NWP for Antarctic
science and logistical support.
Wednesday, October 16 1:00 p.m.-5:15 p.m. and
Thursday, October 17 8:45 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
There will also be a Thursday afternoon session from 1:15 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
for discussions and planning on future work and collaborations.
