Collaborative
Visits to Universities and Agencies
MMM encourages collaborative visits between the scientific
staff and researchers at other institutions, in order to promote
the exchange of science. During FY2002, four staff members
visited universities:
Roelof
Bruintjes (joint appointment with RAP) completed a
six-month collaborative leave with the University of Witwatersrand
in South Africa, June 2002.
Terry
Clark took a collaborative leave to visit Monash University
that concluded in late December 2001.
John
Latham visited the University of Manchester Institute
of Science & Technology from January until February 2002.
Richard
Rotunno began a six-month sabbatical in Italy to teach
and collaborate with researchers at the University of Trento
and the University l'Aquila, in August 2002.
Morris
Weisman took a collaborative leave to be a visiting
professor at the State University of New York at Albany from
September until November 2001.
Visitor
Program
Collaboration between MMM scientists and university or government
agency researchers is a high priority within MMM. To this
end, MMM encourages visits, both long and short term, by members
of other institutions. Students come to study under modelers,
or participate in field experiments. Professors come to collaborate
in many different aspects, often resulting in joint publications
on the collaborated research. In fiscal year 2002, MMM hosted
403 visitors originating from 53 U.S. universities and 39
foreign universities.

MMM hosted four Affiliate Scientists during FY2002. They
were Lance Bosart (SUNY), Larry Mahrt (OSU), Bjorn Stevens
(with CGD), and Xiaolei Zou (FSU). The division was the site
for eight ASP postdoctoral fellows, namely, David Dowell,
Craig Epifanio, Joshua Hacker, Todd Lane, Sonia Lasher-Trapp,
Wen-Wen Tung, Qing-Hong Zhang and
Ian Faloona.
As part of the CAA Project, a six-year effort to develop and
install an MM5-based numerical weather prediction system in
Taiwan, the Mesoscale Prediction Group (MPG) hosted two visitors
from Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration for one month.
The visitors worked under MPG scientists to receive training
in numerical modeling and the development of real-time mesoscale
model forecasting systems. The CAA Project promotes the enhancement
of aviation safety and efficiency in Taiwan, and NCAR research
includes the investigation of phenomena which directly impact
aviation safety, such as the prediction of typhoons and tropical
convective systems.
Workshops
and Colloquia
Cindy Bruyere and Wei
Wang organized and lectured at the two MM5 Tutorials
(January and June), and the WRF Tutorial (also in June). They
also assisted in organizing the MM5 and WRF Workshops, held
in June 2002.
Cindy Bruyere was an invited
speaker at the NWP Prediction Strategy for Africa Workshop
in Pretoria, South Africa in Sept/Oct 2002.
Jimy Dudhia was an invited
speaker at the MM5 and WRF tutorials and workshops during
FY2002.
James Dye organized the
Airborne Field Mill Science Workshop, (see Field
Projects section), which was held in Cocoa Beach, Florida
in November 2001.
Robert L. Gall organized
the USWRP meetings and workshops. The Warm Season Precipitation
Workshop held in Boulder on 7-8 March 2002 had 70 participants.
The USWRP Science Symposium on 22-23 April had 60 participants.
He also organized the THORPEX Workshop in Maryland which attracted
70 participants in mid March 2002.
Wojciech Grabowski organized
the GEWEX Cloud System Study Working Group Workshop in October
2001. There were 30 participants.
Joseph B. Klemp organized
the WRF Planning Meeting in June with 20 participants in Washington,
DC, the WRF Science Board Meeting in Boulder, CO, and, with
William Skamarock, Cindy
Bruyere, and Wei Wang,
the 3rd Annual WRF Users Workshop, and the WRF Users Tutorial,
all in June at NCAR. There were 124 attendees at the 3rd annual
workshop, and 81 at the tutorial.
Ying-Hwa Kuo organized
the 3rd US-Korea Joint Workshop on Weather Analysis &
Prediction held in Boulder on 20-22 February 2002. This workshop
had 50 invited participants.
Margaret LeMone organized
the IHOP Surface BL Data Meeting at NCAR in August 2002 for
20 participants.
Donald Lenschow was the
organizer for the DYCOMS II Workshop at NCAR on 21-23 March
2002.
Chin-Hoh Moeng was one of
the organizers for the MMM Retreat in Estes Park, CO in May
2002, and the GTP Colloquium, "New Developments in Subfilter-Scale
Closures" at NCAR on 1-9 August 2002.
Mitchell Moncrieff organized
the West African Monsoon Workshop at NCAR in November 2001.
There were 30 participants. Dr. Moncrieff also organized the
2nd NASA TRMM Latent Heating Workshop at NCAR in October 2001.
Rebecca Morss co-chaired
the Societal and Economic Impact Assessment sub-program of
The Observing-system Research and Predictability Experiment
(THORpex), which is a major international research and field
program being planned for the next 10 years. Rebecca
Morss is also continuing to participate in the international
and U.S. THORpex planning process.
On June 4-5, 2002, Jordan Powers
and Bill Kuo hosted the
Antarctic Numerical Weather Prediction and Forecasting Workshop.
The workshop's goals were: (1) to review the state and science
of Antarctic weather forecasting and real-time modeling, with
a focus on MMM's Antarctic Mesocale Prediction System (AMPS);
(2) to serve as a forum for the presentation of current research
and ideas in Antarctic meteorology, NWP, and forecasting,
and (3) to solicit feedback from the users of NWP systems
covering Antarctica, including issues of model performance
and support needs. Sessions covered the AMPS system, Antarctic
NWP research and Antarctic forecasting efforts, and the role
of Antarctic NWP in the Ross Island Meteorology Experiment
(RIME). The workshop boosted the profile of MMM's Antarctic
NWP program, strengthened ties within the Antarctic forecasting
community, and yielded new collaborations.
