Scientific Community Interaction

Collaborative Visits to Universities and Agencies (top)

Piotr Smolarkiewicz: Yale University from August to December 2003
Richard Rotunno: University of Trento, Italy from August to November 2002

Visitor Program (top)

The MMM Visitor Program has become an integral part of the division with increased support enabling a larger numbers of visits. Coming from all levels of education, these visitors work with their MMM hosts for varying time periods. Summer is definitely one of the busiest visitor times within MMM since so many of its visitor guests are associated with universities. During FY03, 104 foreign visitors representing 25 foreign countries and 80 universities from around the world participated in the MMM Visitor Program. In all there was a total of 440 visits by 387 visitors.

See the Visitors list for 2003

Howard Bluestein (center), and wife, on sabbatical from University of Oklahoma enjoys the MMM holiday festivities in December 2002. Staff and visiting scientists compare notes. Left to right: Xiaolei Zou (FSU), Chin-Hoh Moeng (MMM), Shu Hua Chen (UC, Davis), and Wen-Wen Tung (ASP).

MMM highly values its Affiliate Scientist appointments in that they enable collaboration on a long-term basis with university scientists closely linked to divisional research. The appointments are based on an agreement between the home university and NCAR. MMM has four Affiliate Scientists: Lance Bosart (State University of New York, Albany), Larry Mahrt (Oregon State University), Bjorn Stevens (shared with CGD)(University of California, Los Angeles), and Xiaolei Zou (Florida State University). ASP postdoctoral fellows who worked closely with MMM scientists were Judith Berner, George Bryan, David Dowell, Ian Faloona, Joshua Hacker, Todd Lane, Sonia Lasher-Trapp, Riwal Plougonven, Axel Seifert, Craig Stroud, Wen-Wen Tung, and Qing-Hong Zhang. As noted in the Educational Activities section, MMM hosted seven SOARS students who were mentored by nine MMM staff during the summer of 2003. The staff members served either as science research mentors or writing and communication mentors.
