Snapshots from a 2D cloud-resolving simulation of a GATE Phase III case where the easterly wave forcing gradually changes.

This figure shows snapshots of the total liquid and ice fields from 2D simulations of GATE Phase III convection forced by an easterly wave. As the forcing changes, the cloud systems evolve from disorganized clusters, through a squall line, to scattered convection. These results compare well with observations and will be used to develop convective parameterization schemes for numerical weather prediction mdoels and climate GCMs.
