The Southern Great Plains 1997 (SGP97) Hydrology Experiment was designed to establish the retrieval algorithms for surface soil moisture, which can be extended for future satellite platforms. The remote sensing instrument for retrieving soil moisture is the L-band Electronically Scanned Thinned Array Radiometer (ESTAR) for daily mapping of an area greater than 10,000 km2 and a period of about a month. In addition to the remote sensing of soil moisture and temperature, part of the field experiment is to evaluate the influence of soil moisture on the local surface energy budget and the influence of mesoscale variability in the surface energy budget on the development of convective boundary layer.
