FOREWORD
back to the Computing Guide Contents

This document was created to provide MMM users with information on the variety of capabilities within MMM's computing environment. It provides basic information on various features, with references at the end of each section to consult for more detailed information. The reference titles are listed at the end of each section; the full reference information can be found in Appendix B. Some of the features included are a table of contents, a glossary, and a reference list.

Needless to say, creating a document with such a broad scope is a major undertaking. Although we have tried to make this document as complete as possible, we acknowledge that, at this stage, the book is not all-inclusive; we intend to revise and update the sections continually.

Style Conventions

boldface
Text that is boldfaced indicates a command that should be entered exactly as specified. In addition, the names of workstations and printers are also boldfaced.
italics
Use of italics indicates that variable information is required and should be provided by the user.
[  ]
Brackets around text indicate a part of a command that is optional. The information inside the brackets is boldfaced or italicized, depending on whether it is variable or not.
typewriter type
A typewriter font (slightly smaller than regular text) is used for displaying shell script examples and code. This font is also used in some cases for prompts and other output that appears on the terminal screen.

Chapter System in this Document

The title page of each chapter gives a description and listing of what the sections in that chapter will contain. At the end of each chapter is a date indicating when the chapter was last updated.

Reference Sources

Many of the documents listed in the reference section are available from MMM's reference library; these are noted in the reference list in Appendix B, and may be checked out for short periods of time by contacting a member of the Systems Management Group.
