CD-ROM Writer

Verifying if a system has a CD-ROM Writer

CD-ROM Writers are used to write data to CDs. Systems purchased after midyear 2001 have CD-ROM Writers (or CD-RW). To determine whether your system has a CD-ROM writer or just a regular CD-ROM drive, you can check in the Device Manager.

Open the Control Panel, (for Windows XP system, if available click on the option located on the left labeled Switch to Classic View), double-click on the System icon. Under the Hardware Tab, you will find a button labeled Device Manager. Click on that button.

A prompt will appear shown below, click on OK.

Once the Device Manager opens, expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives option by clicking on the "+" next to it. The drive will be listed and if it is a CD-RW, its name will contain RW. Below is an example of the Device Manager for a system that has a CD-RW installed:

General-use systems that have CD-ROM Writers

If you do not have a CD-RW, there are several systems which are located in general use areas that have CD-ROM Writers. They are:

Writing to a CD using the Roxio Software

The software that is used to write to a CD is called Roxio Easy CD Creator. This example will step you through creating a Data CD using the Roxio Software. Writeable CD-ROMs are available from your Administrative staff. Insert a writeable CD-ROM and launch the Roxio software.

To open Roxio, under the Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Program Group (located under the Start, Programs menu), select Project Selector.

When you first open Roxio, several initial windows may open. It could be a license acceptance window, an upgrade window, or a registration window. If you see the license acceptance window, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click on OK. If you see the upgrade window, click on OK. (Do not select Upgrade Now.) If you see a registration window, dismiss the window.

Once Roxio finally opens, the following window will be displayed:

Move your mouse over the option Make a Data CD. Other options will appear, click on the option dataCD Project.

Once you select dataCD Project, the following window will be displayed:

On the top half of the window, locate the files that you wish to write to the CD, select them, and click on the Add button located in the middle of the window.

Make sure you have a writeable CD in your drive. Once all the files that you want on the CD are listed in the lower half of the window, click on the record button.
