Mesoscale & Microscale Meteorology Division, NCAR | University of Wisconsin,Madison | Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide

Overview

In collaboration with PNRA (Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide) and the Italian Air Force (IAF) Meteorological Service, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC) of the University of Wisconsin, and the Byrd Polar Research Center of The Ohio State University cordially invite you to participate in the 2nd Antarctic Meteorological Observation, Modeling, and Forecasting (AMOMF) Workshop. This is graciously being hosted by PRNA and the IAF and will be held in Rome, Italy on 26-28 June 2007. The site will be:

The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) Piazzale Aldo Moro
7-00185 Rome (Roma) RM
Italy (Italia)

This year the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is providing an opportunity for travel funding for U.S. grad students and early career scientists. This opportunity is described below. Details on workshop topics, logistics, and registration may be found at

http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/events/antarctic07/index.php.

This workshop brings together those with research and operational/logistical interests in Antarctic meteorology and forecasting and related disciplines. As in the past, the annual activities and status of the AMRC, AWS, and AMPS (Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System) efforts will be addressed, and feedback and results from their user communities will be solicited. More broadly, this workshop also is a forum for current results and ideas in Antarctic meteorology, numerical weather prediction, and weather forecasting, from contributors around the world. There will be discussions on the relationships among international efforts and Antarctic forecasting, logistical support, and science. We welcome papers and posters on these topics.

A focus this year will be Antarctic weather forecasting. In conjunction with the International Polar Year (IPY), the release of an educational package of web-based materials on Antarctic weather and forecasting will be announced at the workshop. Submissions related to Antarctic forecasting and real-time modeling practices or operations are especially welcome.

The Office of Polar Programs of the U.S. National Science Foundation is providing funding for graduate students and young investigators (i.e., no more than 5 years past Ph.D. graduation) at U.S. institutions for partial travel support (up to $3500 each) for expenses to participate in both the 2nd Antarctic Meteorological Observation, Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) meeting in Perugia, Italy the following week (see http://www.iugg2007perugia.it). Roughly ten awards are expected, with 2/3 going to graduate students and 1/3 going to young investigators. Graduate students and young investigators from under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Please contact David Bromwich (bromwich.1@osu.edu) for more details. The application deadline is January 12, 2007.

Workshop Schedule & Presentations

A workshop schedule will be posted on the "Agenda" page once submissions are received. Approximately half of the workshop period will address Antarctic forecasting, AMPS, and modeling, while the other will address AMRC and AWS developments and Antarctic observational and related research. Iceberg updates will also likely be addressed.

We are soliciting AMOMF Workshop participation from all who are interested, and the registration deadline is June 1, 2007. Workshop schedule details will be posted after submissions are received. Talks and extended abstracts are encouraged from those who would like to make an oral presentation, with presentations being afforded 15-20 min. If enough submissions are received, there will be a poster session.

We will produce a preprint volume, and extended abstracts are due June 1, 2007. Extended abstracts may be up to 6 pages. American Meteorological Society (AMS) format for conference papers is preferred, but not required. Either PDF format or Word documents may be submitted. The papers should be submitted through the "Upload Extended Abstract" link on the web page.

Registration Details

Please register for the workshop by June 1, 2007 through the "Registration" link on this web page.

Please feel free to pass this on to colleagues to whom you think it may be of interest. Questions on the workshop may be directed to Dr. Jordan Powers at powers@ucar.edu in English or to Dr. Andrea Pellegrini at andrea.pellegrini@consorzio.pnra.it in Italian. If you would like to be removed from the mailing list used for this announcement and workshop, you may e-mail powers@ucar.edu.
