International Workshop on Hydrometeorological and Hydrologic Ensemble Prediction
Sponsored by HEPEX, the Hydrologic Ensemble Prediction Experiment
Co-conveners:
Tom Hamill (NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Center), Martyn Clark (University of Colorado), John Schaake (NOAA Office of Hydrology), and Roberto Buizza (European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts)
Point of Contact:
Tom Hamill (tom.hamill@noaa.gov) or Martyn Clark (clark@vorticity.colorado.edu)
Dates:
Tuesday, 19 July 2005 - Friday, 22 July 2005; the main workshop will be Tuesday - Thursday, with a Steering Group meeting on Friday.
Where:
NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado, USA. (map)
Description:
This international workshop will discuss the coupling of ensemble weather forecast data into hydrologic prediction systems, and will discuss the latest results in the development of ensemble weather prediction systems, the development of hydrologic prediction systems, and the integration of the two. The workshop will discuss verification and correction of ensemble weather forecasts, development of techniques for using weather information in hydrologic prediction systems, new methods in hydrologic prediction, data assimilation issues in hydrology and hydrometeorology, and the development of data sets and demonstration projects.
The discipline of coupling weather and hydrologic systems is new and evolving rapidly. We welcome submissions by end users on their hydrologic and meteorological requirements, and we welcome more speculative talks on the difficult problems and possible creative solutions for achieving the desired "engineering quality" hydrologic predictions. We also welcome presentations on how we may set up demonstration projects and develop data sets for intercomparison of methods. The workshop will consist largely of oral presentations, but we intend to allot much of the time for discussion, plus an afternoon breakout sessions with specific tasks (e.g., formulating requirements for a community data set to test the coupling of atmospheric and hydrologic ensemble predictions).
A HEPEX Steering Group meeting will take place on Friday (workshop participants are invited but not required to attend).
