Microscale and Mesoscale Solutions to Global-Scale Problems

Leo Donner

Princeton University

Scale interactions from the microscale and mesoscale through the global scale remain as central unsolved problems in atmospheric science.  This seminar will discuss two problems whose intrinsic characteristics are microscale and mesoscale, but whose solutions are important for global-scale climate and chemistry.  These problems are chemical tracer transport by convention and radiative forcing by low clouds in the presence of deep convection.  Important insights on the global-scale aspects of these problems can be obtained by applying strategies rooted in microscale and mesoscale meteorology, including novel combinations of mesoscale and chemical field programs and fundamental studies of convective dynamics.
