Convection in a Monsoon Environment:  Darwin and the Tropical Warm Pool International Cloud Experiment (TWPICE)

Peter May

Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre

 Melbourne, Australia

There has recently been a large field experiment studying the characteristics and impacts of tropical thunderstorms in monsoon environment (TWPICE) around Darwin, Northern Australia.  The observing network around Darwin is probably the most complete anywhere in the tropics and was substantially augmented for the experiment.  This included three hourly sondes from five sites, several cloud radars, radiation and flux measurements, and five research aircraft.  This talk will discuss some characteristics of storms in the region and provide background for the motivation behind TWPICE.  The experiment design, the weather we experienced, and some observations will be discussed and opportunities for research highlighted.
