RECENT PROGRESS AND PLANS FOR GLOBAL NWP AT ECMWF

Philippe Bougeault

Head of Research, ECMWF

In the recent years the improvement of the medium-range forecast skill has continued at a rapid rate of one day per decade. I will discuss the main components of progress, e.g. the improvements in resolution, physical parametrization, data assimilation and use of satellite data, and provide some highlights on recent upgrades. I will discuss the operational forecasts of Katrina and the forecasts of the parallel higher-resolution experimental suite. I will also show some recent success of the monthly and seasonal forecasting systems. I will then describe the plans for the next ten years based on the current strategy discussions.
