Tutorial Overview

A Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model tutorial will be offered during a 2-week period in July 2008 at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado

The tutorial will be divided into 3 sessions. Participants can attend any combination of these sessions.

1.  Basic WRF tutorial (14-18 July 2008)
The tutorial will consist of lectures on various components of the WRF modeling system for both the Advanced Research WRF (WRF-ARW) and the Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model (WRF-NMM), along with hands-on practice sessions. The topics include:

a. WRF Pre-processing System
b. WRF dynamics and numerics
c. WRF physics
d. Software framework
e. Post-processing graphical tools
f. Model Evaluation Tool (MET)

2.  WRF-Var specific tutorial (21-22 July 2008)
A WRF-ARW only variational data assimilation tutorial (including hands-on practice) will be offered for 2 days during the second week of the tutorial. Users may attend this tutorial without attending the basic WRF tutorial however, a basic understanding of the WRF model is required to make full use of the WRF-Var tutorial.

3.  WRF-Chem specific tutorial (23-24 July 2008)
A WRF-ARW only chemstry tutorial will be offered for 2 days during second week of the tutorial. Users may attend this tutorial without attending the basic WRF however, a basic understanding of the WRF model is required to make full use of the WRF-Chem tutorial.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of atmospheric science and numerical modeling, as well as Fortran and Unix, is required for the class. All participants are strongly encouraged to work through one or more of the online tutorials for ARW, NMM, and WRF-Var, depending on your interest, prior to attending the tutorial classes.

Available Spaces

Due to the constraints of physical space and computers, the maximum number of people we can accommodate for each part of the tutorial is 60, and we will accept 10 people on a waiting list for any cancellations. Register early, as registration always exceeds capacity!

Registration & Payment

The registration fee for the basic WRF tutorial is $400. The registration fee for the WRF-Var and WRF-Chem tutorials is $150 each. Participants can attend any combination of these tutorials.

Payments are due by 16 May 2008 and there will be no refunds for cancellations made after 16 June 2008.

Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation that you have registered. Confirmation that you have been accepted to the tutorial class will be sent once payment has been received.

If payment has not been received by the 16 May 2008 deadline, you will be removed from the tutorial and your spot given to someone on the waiting list. Participants on the waiting list will be notified as soon as possible regarding available space in the class.

If you have any questions or are unable to register please e-mail: workshop@ucar.edu.

Please see the Registration & Payment Page for more details.
