Tutorial Overview

A Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model tutorial will be offered during a 2-week period in July 2009 at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory, Boulder, Colorado.

The tutorial will be divided into 4 sessions. Participants can attend any combination of these sessions.

1. Basic WRF Tutorial (13-17 July 2009)
The tutorial will consist of lectures on various components of the WRF modeling system for both the Advanced Research WRF (WRF-ARW) and the Nonhydrostatic Mesoscale Model (WRF-NMM), along with hands-on practice sessions. The topics include:
a. WRF Pre-processing System
b. WRF dynamics and numerics
c. WRF physics
d. Software framework
e. Post-processing graphical tools

2. WRF-Var Tutorial (20-22 July 2009)
A WRF-ARW only variational data assimilation tutorial (including hands-on practice) will be offered for 2 and a half days during the second week of the tutorial. Users may attend this tutorial without attending the basic WRF tutorial however; a basic understanding of the WRF model is required to make full use of the WRF-Var tutorial.

3. WRF-Chem Tutorial (22-23 July 2009)
A WRF-ARW only chemstry tutorial will be offered for 2 days during second week of the tutorial. Users may attend this tutorial without attending the basic WRF however, a basic understanding of the WRF model is required to make full use of the WRF-Chem tutorial.

4. MET Tutorial (23-24 July 2009)
A tutorial on the Model Evaluation Tools (MET) will be offered for 1 and a half days during second week. MET is a package of state-of-the-art forecast evaluation (i.e., verification) tools designed for use with WRF model output. The tutorial will include some training on verification practices as well as the application of MET, with lectures and hands-on practical sessions. Users may attend this tutorial without attending the basic WRF tutorial. However; a basic understanding of the WRF model is desirable in order to make full use of the MET tutorial.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of atmospheric science and numerical modeling, as well as Fortran and Unix, is required for the class. All participants are strongly encouraged to work through one or more of the online tutorials for WRF-ARW, WRF-NMM, WRF-Var, and MET depending on your interest, prior to attending the tutorial classes.

Available Spaces

Due to the constraints of physical space and computers, we can only accommodate a maximum of 60 participants for the WRF basic tutorial and a maximum of 40 participants for the WRF-Var, MET, and WRF-Chem tutorials.

Registration & Payment

The registration fees are:

$400.00 for the basic WRF tutorial,
$200.00 for the WRF-Var tutorial,
$150.00 for the MET tutorial, and
$150.00 for the WRF-Chem tutorial

Payments are due by 8 May 2009 and there will be no refunds for cancellations made after 22 June 2009.

Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation that you have registered. Another confirmation that you have been accepted to the tutorial class will be sent once payment has been received.

If payment has not been received by the 8 May 2009 deadline, you will be removed from the tutorial and your spot given to someone on the waiting list. Participants on the waiting list will be notified as soon as possible regarding available space in the class.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel your attendance at the WRF Tutorial, please be aware of our policy:

Before 22 June 2009, we will refund your registration fee less $25.00 to cover administrative fees.

After 22 June 2009, there will be no refunds.
