Wildfire Experiment Instrument Test
August 27-October 9, 1998
Objective: The
National Science Foundation's C130 Hercules aircraft flew over
wildfires in the western U.S. to develop techniques for observing and
modeling forest fires.

September 3, 1998 - Test flight: prescribed
grass fire in Boulder County set by Boulder Fire Department.

September 4, 1998 - The Challenge Fire (Flathead National Forest,
Kalispell, MT) and several prescribed natural burns within and near
Glacier National Park.

September 16, 1998- The Bear Trap Fire, Beaverhead/Deerlodge
National Forest, MT) and grass fires near Buffalo Bill Reservoir, WY,
and Meeteetse, WY.

September 28, 1998- Prescribed fire
near Dunlap, CO.

September 29, 1998- Prescribed fire
near Salida, CO.
-
October 6, 1998 -The Edna wildfire
complex near Banning, CA, burned 18000 acres under Santa Ana winds.
