Forecasters: Morris Weisman (NCAR/MMM)
Today:
Surface moisture remains in the STEPS domain, with dew points in the mid-60s. A weak cold front entering Nebraska this morning will push across the STEPS domain this afternoon providing a triggering mechanism for convection in northeast Colorado and southwest Nebraska. This early development should spread south and east into northwest Kansas. Upper level winds are a little stronger than yesterday thereby increasing the shear some so that the expected convection could be better organized than yesterday. Otherwise, we expect conditions similar to yesterday with potentially severe, widespread convection.
Note: The 9am formal weather briefing and debriefing of the previous day's operations have been suspended. We will maintain a daily look at the weather, but no other briefings/debriefings will be conducted. The forecast matrix will no longer be posted.
The following research systems are all operational: the Ops Center, CHILL, S-Pol, LMA, MGLASS, and YRFS. These systems are all that remain available to STEPS. There are seven MGLASS sondes remaining.
We will be standing by with the radars starting around 12-1pm for mid- to late-afternoon convection, some of which could be intense but generally short-lived. There will be an 18Z sounding at Goodland, with the possibility of later ones should conditions warrrant.
Only convection in the STEPS domain was fair-weather Cu, with little or no echo. Secured operations at 2327Z.
