Fixed Ground-based Observing Systems
The radar network consists of two research radars,
S-Pol (SPol)
near Idalia, Colorado and
CSU-CHILL (CHIL)
near Bethune, Colorado and the NWS WSR-88D
located at Goodland (KGLD), Kansas.
All the areas of dual-Doppler coverage are shaded with the CHIL-SPol research
dual-Doppler
areas also shown by circles passing through the locations of these radars.
There will also be triple-Doppler coverage within
and surrounding the CHIL-SPol-KGLD triangle. The NMIMT
lightning mapping system
will be
located within this inner triple-Doppler coverage area. Topographic heights
are contoured every 1000 ft, with a 3-peat pattern of thickness starting at
3000 ft just east of Goodland (radar network provided by L. Jay Miller).
