From: ljmill@mmm.mmm.ucar.EDU (Jay Miller) Subject: STEPS update To: steps@krypton.hpc.sdsmt.edu Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 15:47:31 -0700 (MST) STEPS participants: For your information, I have included an exchange of email between Dave Carlson and myself: 1) Message 4/9 - my email to Dave 2) Message 3/9 - Dave's response to me 3) Message 2/9 - my response to Dave Since my last message, I have posted Walt Lyons comments and one figure, Bard Zajac's comments and all 9 figures from his email sent before the meeting, and a *final response to the FAC* based on small revisions I got from Larry Carey, Don MacGorman, and my own rewording of the description of the possible networks near Greeley. As far as STEPS responding to the FAC, I think this completes all that we need to do for now. I also added the figures from Llyle Barker on the dry line positions to the STEPS Scientific Overview Document. For those of you with proposals still in the review process, I think it is entirely appropriate to reference not only the STEPS Scientific Overview Document at http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/community/steps.html but also the meeting information at http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/community/steps-relocation.html if you need to for responses to reviewers, figures, or whatever you might need. Also, for your information Pat Kennedy of the CSU-CHILL facility will be making a trip to the Goodland area next week to look for possible sites for the CHILL radar near Bethune. One site that has already emerged as very promising is the Kit Carson County Airport about three miles south of Burlington. This is a small general aviation-only airport on 700 acres owned by the city of Burlington, and it has three-phase power into it. Airports are usually really nice places to put radars since they are locally flat, unobstructed areas. This site would shorten the CHILL-KGLD baseline from 63 to 52 km and rotate the research dual-Doppler, dual-polarimetric lobes about 15 deg CCW, making the alignment slightly more east-west than the one shown in the STEPS Scientific Overview Document. In light of what you have already done, should we still send you a written response to the FAC? Jay ************* Message 3/9 From David J. Please keep those materials accessible for a few weeks. Dave C. ************* Message 2/9 To David J. Carlson) Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 09:16:44 -0700 (MST) Cc: ljmill@ucar.edu Dave: The material covered at the STEPS meeting on November 1 can be found at http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/community/steps-relocation.html This site includes everything that was handed out at the meeting as well as a few color images that were not handed out, but some of which were covered by Larry Carey. I'm in the process of adding one figure that Walt Lyons (YRFS) covered that deals with the TLE's, and one or two that Bard Zajac (CIRA) dealing with lightning polarities. There is a draft response to the FAC at the website which Don MacGorman and Dave Rust (NSSL/OU) wrote. This will change very little, but I'll post a revision as soon as I get it done.
