As of 11 February, no determination had been made by NSF regarding funding of the Citation deployment planned for June, and there did not seem to be a definitive answer at hand. There are two other lengthy deployments scheduled for this summer, and we have reached the point where the Citation schedule must be firmed up. In addition to the field work, normal inspections and engine overhauls must also be accomplished between April and July. It is our opinion and that of a number of other STEPS investigators that this represents a significant loss of a key measurement component. We appreciate the efforts of those who attempted to incorporate the Citation as a core element. Unfortunately, we cannot indefinitely reserve this block of time, especially since it could better serve the needs of another program. We hope that the STEPS field measurement program meets with favorable weather and is successful in advancing the understanding of storm electrification.
