Terminal Server

MMM now has a Windows Terminal Server. A Terminal Server allows a user to remotely log onto a Windows Server. Once logged on, it looks like you are sitting at the console of a Windows systems with the standard graphical desktop and navigation abilities.

Connecting to the Terminal Server

The terminal server can be accessed from Linux, Solaris, Mac OSX, and of course Windows systems. Use your existing Windows user account to log onto this system. If you do not have an account or forgot your password, contact Jose Castilleja (ext. 8998).

From Linux, Mac OSX and Solaris systems:
- From the command line type: rdserver
  The rdserver command resides in /usr/local/bin. If just typing the command does not work, add /usr/local/bin to your path or type the full path to the command.
After issuing this command you should see a screen similar to this:

As you can see, your username is automatically filled in for you.
From Mac OSX Systems only:
- Go to /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remote Desktop Connection/Remote Desktop Connection
  This package does not require X-Windows to run. The configuration can be done on the fly in a graphical display as opposed to the command line. The tool looks like this:
  
  Clicking on the arrow next to the word 'Options' gives you:
  
  This expanded view gives you many options for configuring your window and other behaviors of your session. This info is usually remembered from the last session.
  - In the 'Computer' field type: serviceberry.mmm.ucar.edu
From Windows Systems:
- Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Communications-->Remote Desktop Connection

Some software packages do not work well in a multi-user environment. As a result, Meeting Maker is NOT INSTALLED on the terminal server.
Other packages may be considered for installation.

Session Properties

Access to this server is somewhat limited. The division purchased licenses to allow for 20 concurrent users of this server. Because of the limited resources, certain rules have been established to prevent licenses from being allocated but not used.

A user can have only one session at any given time
Example: You log onto the terminal server from your workstation. You then go over to George's workstation and try to log in again. Instead of two active sessions, your first session is terminated and any open files and running processes are transferred over to the second session.
Idle Sessions are terminated after 24 hours. Any unsaved work is lost at that time.
Disconnected Sessions are terminated after 3 hours
Disconnected Sessions can be done manually or can occur when network connectivity is lost.
