The Memo of the First Meeting for BMB-NCAR Project

NCAR

Main contents: Dir. Kuo gave a brief salutatory firstly, and emphasized that BMB should provide high
quality of analysis to support other countriesÕ forecast model with the B08FDP,
which needs WRF running maturely in BMB. At the same time, the results of WRF model
forecast with the high resolution should be provided to forecasters as
reference with the B08RDP, so the work of Shui-Yong Fan in NCAR is important. Combining the
both sides demand of the Beijing Olympics project and the cooperation item of BMB
and NCAR, and considering arrangement of time and human resource, everyone
discussed the six month work arrangement for Shui-Yong Fan in NCAR. Results are as follows:
1, To
check to find out what background error problem exist in the current MM5 3DVAR system of BMB as
soon as possible. Shui-Yong Fan will demonstrate analytical results of background error . Dr. Guo, Dr. Huang and Shui-Yong Fan will discuss these results together.
2, On
the foundation of the existing MM5 3DVAR operational system of BMB, to replace MM5Õs
3DVAR system with WRFÕs 3DVAR system to test firstly, carrying on one or two
case studies; then making a long-term calculation and verification. Shui-Yong Fan should be familiar with WRF 3DVAR
system and IBM HPC as
soon as possible, and adjust the model which combines MM5 with WRF3DVAR on the
IBM machine to make a case study. According to the calculation resource, a long-term
calculation can be processing in the IBM machine of NCAR or be sent back BMB. The
latter work should need to cooperate with Ji-Qin Zhong. It hopes that this work
can improve the forecast performance of BMBÕs operational system fast and availably.
Note: To try to finish the above work in July. (Dr. Guo
will take a holiday in August.)
3, Shui-Yong
Fan will build up a WRF 3DVAR
system based on the discussed WRF model set, make case studies with local data
of Beijing, analyze results with Dr. Huang and Dr. Guo together, and modify the
setup and configuration of the model according to analytical results.
4, Shui-Yong
Fan will make use of the WRF
3DVAR system to calculate with local data of Beijing, accumulate model forecast
fields for the needs of the renewal of background error, and renew background error to compute and analyze again. The
analysis of the district of 3km resolution is a new work. Therefore, so it hopes
that having breakthrough in this aspect.
