Time:
02:00~03:30 pm, Dec 19, 2005
Participants:
Dir. Kuo, Dr. Huang, Dr. Guo, Shui-Yong Fan, Jiqin Zhong
Shui-Yong had run case 0607 one more time and showed the precipitation
forecasts and verification scores of EXP02, EXP08, and EXP11 respectively. It was found that using T213 forecast as
background led to more serious false alarm in 0607 case. The score of this
single case showed forecast improvement by using AVN 12h forecast as
background.
Shui-Yong also calculated new WRF BES using gen_be with WRF
forecast of 15 days. The BE structures were similar with those of MM5. Shui-Yong
will continue the BE work at IUM.
The landuse in WRF looks reasonable. The grid-point
precipitation problem was also found in MM5.
Dr. Huang visited IUM last week. He gave two presentations
on DFI and 4DAVR, respectively, in addition to the project review. He also made
further planning for the BMB-UCAR project with the IUM management.
At MMM, Jiqin will focus on running 27km domain, and the
multi-domain will be run in NCAR only in case of abnormal situation occurred
with running in IUM. Jiqin should compare verification scores of WRF model and
MM5 model of the cases during Jun 1-7. Once WRF model is proved to have better
performance, all following research will be carried on based on WRF model. Jiqin
should spend most of her time at NCAR on the BMB local data. Currently only
TEMP and SYNOP are used in the BMB operational data assimilation system. It was
agreed that other conventional data, e.g. PILOT and AIRCRAFT, should be
included. This means a request to BMB to get the data from CMA and impact
studies. After the BMB local data, Jiqin may run a few experiments with conventional
observations other than TEMP and SYNOP to assess their impact.
At IUM, Shui-Yong will continue his work and extend the 27
km domain work to nested domains, and extend the experiment length from 1 week
to 1 month. It is planned to have a major operational upgrade, which should
include WRF-Var, new BE and AVN.
He also discussed with IUM management and Min Chen the
possibility of a DFI work and made a preliminary plan.
Dir. Guo also shared with the group some information he got
during his trip to Beijing 2 weeks ago. Most B08 RDP participants planned to
test their systems in Beijing in August next year. This requires WRF model
could be run operationally before August 2006. High resolution model analysis
fields and observations are required by these participants. We need do more on
cases in August.
The next meeting will be at 2:00 pm, Jan 3, 2006.
