The 16th BMB-NCAR Project Meeting

1. Discuss the project progress

Jiqin started to work on the wind profiler data. She found that the observation preprocessor ignores the data with u, v and w components of wind in the little_r_input format file. This type of data should be converted to wind speed and direction observation. Experiments of assimilating the wind profiler data should be reported at the next meeting.

 Dr. Guo helped Jiqin find the reason why in her early assimilation experiments the AWS data with pressure and relative humidity reports were rejected. The units in the data and required by the preprocessor were different.

Jiqin showed some results from her AWS data assimilation experiments. The analysis increments were quite different with different sfc_assi options. Even the locations of the increments were different. As many stations and variables were used in these experiments, it was difficult to draw any firm conclusion. Dr. Huang asked Jiqin to do some single observation experiments, using only one element of single station in each run.

Jiqin carried out several pseudo GPS PW observation tests and showed some results. However, Dr. Guo found out that the observation error used in these tests was too large. Dr. Guo suggested Jiqin learn more detail about 3DVAR in the following time.

Dr. Huang suggested Jiqin take the WRF tutorial next week.

2. Make a task list

l Complete the assimilation of wind profiler data.

l Continue the work on the assimilation of GPS ZTD in WRF-Var.

l Perform the single ob experiments to understand the differences due to the use of different sfc_assi options.
