The 18th BMB-NCAR Project Meeting

Time: 02:00~03:45 pm, Feb 16, 2006

Participants: Dr. Huang, Dr. Guo, and Jiqin Zhong

1.     Discuss the project progress

Jiqin compared the analysis increment using WRF 12 hour forecast as background with that using AVN 12 hour forecast as background. Results showed that the amplitude of analysis increment of most fields using WRF 12 hour forecast as background is smaller than that using AVN 12 hour forecast as background. The observation used in those experiments included AWS and GPS PWV. Dr. Huang pointed out that the former should be more reasonable than the latter.

Jiqin also made experiments to tune surface observation errors for sfc_assi=2 with which we could get equivalent analysis increment as that got with sfc_assi=1 with original observation errors.

 Jiqin continued the serial experiments with the EXP15 and EXP16.

EXP15:

avn12f, MM5 model, WRFVAR

         passed=4, var_scaling=1, len_scaling=1, check_rh=2, sfc_assi=2

         t_err=2C, p_err=100pa, v_err=1.1m/s rh_err=10%

EXP16:

avn12f, MM5 model, WRFVAR

         passed=4, var_scaling=1, len_scaling=1, check_rh=2, sfc_assi=2

         t_err=1.3C, p_err=100pa, v_err=0.9m/s rh_err=6%

The verification results showed the scores with sfc_assi option set to 1 is higher than that with sfc_assi option set to 2.

Dr. Guo Yong-Run had provided the verification package on the website.

2.     Make a task list

Learn to set up the verification package and verify the serial experiment result.

Redo the EXP11 with WRF (marked as EXP11_WRF_AVN12F) and compare the performance of MM5 model and WRF model by the verification result.

Redo EXP11 with WRF and use WRF 12 hour forecast as background (marked as EXP11_WRF_WRF12F). Compare the performance of EXP11_WRF_WRF12F with that of EXP11_WRF_AVN12F by the verification result.

Do EXP11 joining with assimilation of AWS, GPSPW and wind profiler data respectively. Try to find the contribution of these local data to the forecast by the verification result.

 3. Next meeting

 The next meeting will be at 2:00 pm, Feb 28, 2006.
