The 20th BMB-NCAR Project Meeting

Time: 02:00~03:00 pm, Mar 28, 2006

Participants: Dr. Huang, Dr. Guo, and Jiqin Zhong

1.     Discuss the project progress

Jiqin had run more experiments in the last two weeks. From these experiments, we could see using wrf12h forecast as background was superior to using avn12h forecast as background.

We found something improper with the landuse.tbl file used in WRF run. Comparing to exp17, the verification score appeared better in exp17_newtbl, in which landuse.tbl file was replaced by that of MM5.

We found the terrain file used in 27km domain in MM5 model had the nesting information from 9km domain. But the scores of WRF surface wind and temperature forecast were worse than that of MM5 after removing the nesting information of terrain.

Assimilation of AWS data had positive/neutral impact on the upper variables and surface wind, temperature in both 27km and 9km domain, while negative impact on surface pressure and humidity.

Following Dr. WangÕs advice, Jiqin ran two cases by converting MM5 pressure level data coming from REGRID to the format of SI's hinterp output, then run WRF model as exp17_newtbl. The verification scores showed this made the scores of surface variable even worse. Further investigation is needed.

For JiqinÕs remaining time at NCAR, Dr. Huang advised Jiqin to first understand the characteristics of local AWS, PW data. Dr. Huang suggested Jiqin to carry out further data impact experiment with WRF model.

2.     Make a task list

Understand the distribution of local data on 27km domain and 9km domain.

Understand how O-B of every AWS station behaves and make clear the reason of the abnormal situation.

Assimilating AWS data with WRF model and using wrf12h as background.

3. Next meeting
