The 26th BMB-NCAR Project Meeting

Time: 02:30~04:00 pm, June 28, 2006

Participants: Yingchun Wang, Xiang-Yu Huang, Yong-Run Guo, Bill Kuo and Min Chen

  1. Dr. Kuo welcomed Director WangÕs visit and wish to see a detailed work plan for the 3D-Var project come out from this visit.
  2. Dr. Guo presented a brief summary of the progress made in the past 6 months. He and Dr. Huang were satisfied with JiqinÕs work.
  3. Director Wang made a few comments: 1) We should have a detailed plan for the next year; 2) The work of BMB-NCAR project should meet the demands of both operational weather forecast of BMB and the project for Olympic 2008; 3) The collaboration of BMB and NCAR should be on the basis of our common goal and interest, which currently focus on the investigation of WRF. 4) MM5 is the operational model of BMB currently, but WRF will be our next operational model for the meteorological support for Olympic game 2008. Therefore, more investigation on WRF should be included in this project other than WRF-3DVAR.
  4. Dr. Kuo agreed with Director Wang and suggested that Wei Wang and Jimy Dudhia could be involved in this project, if necessary.
  5. Dr. Huang had a brief review on the working status of this project. He also outlined the detailed work plan for the second year of the project.
  6. Dr. Huang showed two maps of observations over the BMB operational domain from BMB operational setup and from the NCAR archived GTS data, which indicated that many observations can be collected from GTS, in addition to SYNOP, TEMP and METAR currently used in BMB operational system. Director Wang supported him and promised to push the collection of GTS data and its operational implementations.
  7. There is a lack of communication after JiqinÕs return. Dr. Huang wished to have a contact point at BMB for the project. Both Dirctor Wang and Dr Kuo supported the idea and pointed Min Chen as the BMB contact point for this project. Director Wang also confirmed Zuofang ZhengÕs 6-month visit to MMM from January 2007.
  8. Dr. Kuo suggested some topics for the next meeting: 1) a detailed plan for the next year; 2) investigation on WRF model in other area such as physics, etc.; 3) Other specific demands of BMB/IUM for next year.
  9. Next meeting will be at 9:30 am, June 29, 2006.
