The Fifth Meeting Memo of BMB-NCAR Project

Participants: Dr. Huang, Dr. Guo, Shui-Yong Fan

Main contents:

1、 Discuss the project progress since last meeting：① Shui-Yong collected the verification results of MM5 operational system during June 2~7 from Ji-Qin. ② Shui-Yong made a detailed note on all of the 710 data. ③ Dr. Guo found some mistakes in the Little_r observation file for 3DVAR_OBSPROC, and Shui-Yong has fixed the decoder program. ④ Shui-Yong did many single-obs tests and showed the results to Dr. Huang and Guo. After the discussion, all of three think the BES of MM5 operational system has some unreasonable structure and should be replaced by a better BES, for example, BES of KMA. ⑤ Shui-Yong wrote some code of gen_be stage0 for MM5, but all code is still uncompleted. ⑥ Dr. Guo discussed the Balance_type=3 in MM5 operational system with Syed Rizvi. If with a "balance_type=3" BES, the response between wind and temperature are normal at middle and high levels but anomalous at the low levels? Rizvi thought that for Indian region the main difference (between BE with balance type 1 and 3) noticed was in the lower levels (850 hPa and below) and in areas with high topography. The contribution of balanced component of pressure was large with balance_type =3, and there was no anomaly noticed with single obs test, in the sense that 1 K temperature warming at lower levels (close to surface) produced cyclonic circulation in the lower levels.

2、 Make a task list for Shui-Yong：① Plot the verifications of BMB operational forecast from Jun1-7,2005. ② Replace mm53dvar by ncar3dvar and BMB BES by KMA BES, make and verify the MM5 forecast from June1-7,2005, and then plot the verifications to compare with the verifications of BMB operational forecast. ③ Continue to complete the work of gen_be stage0 for MM5.

3、 Because Dr. Guo will be away for 3 weeks, so next meeting will be at 2:00 pm, on Sep 7. Shui-Yong and Dr. Huang will discuss project progress regularly before the next meeting.
