The Eighth BMB-NCAR Project Meeting

1.   Discuss the project progress

á      Parallel runs

Shui-Yong has cleaned up all the diagrams and showed them on the meeting. The scores of EXP00, EXP01 and EXP02 were easier to compare. The scores of EXP02 were a little better than EXP00 and EXP01. Dr. Huang and Guo hoped that the scores of EXP03 may be better than those of EXP00~02, or at least the same. Further tunes to EXP03 will be done. Shui-Yong also computed vertically integrated BIAS and RMS scores.

  

   EXP03: replace ncar3dvar by wrfvar_v2.1. Shui-Yong Found when the option SFC_ASSI is 2, wrfvar_v2.1 has some problems, and after the discussion with Dr. Guo, he changed the SFC_ASSI option to 1. Other configurations of EXP03 are the same as those of ncar3dvar.

 

á      Gen_be work

Shui-Yong has debugged the code to the step of DA_Diffenrence.

á      Verification

Shui-Yong showed the standard output results of EXP02, including initial and final cost functions and the ratio J_min/N_obs and some innovation statistics. Shui-Yong also showed the results of single-obs test of EXP02. They are not bad, but need more tunes.

 

Dr. Huang suggested the δb of special humidity should be increased because of the bad analysis and had an idea that bad analysis of 2m special humidity had impacted on 2m temperature. Dr. Guo suggested making a time-series diagram of vertically integrated scores to compare.

 

Dr. Huang and Guo suggested that Shui-Yong should make sure that the number of observations used by 00h or 12h verification of EXP00~02 are the same because of the same first guess field of three experiments at 00h or 12h.

2.   Make a task list

á      Analyze the verification results and write some texts for the results obtained so far.

á      Run EXP03 and compare the scores with those of EXP00~02.

á      Do the single-obs tests using the EXP03 configuration.

á      Make statistics of the initial and final cost functions, and some innovation statistics of EXP03.

á      Continue the stage0 work.
