Welcome to the CWB Project page!
(Updated 20 November 2009)
A, WRFVar Shell and code
End-to-end testing run
The end-to-end testing C-shell script: Run_CWB-WPS-WRFVAR-WRF.csh,
running in NCAR IBM (bluefire.ucar.edu)
can be downloaded
here, which includes WPS, real, cwbobs decoder, obsproc, WRFVar,
update_bc, and WRF for
6-h cycling run.
The namelist files used for this script
is namelist_V3.0.tar.gz,
which is for CWB 45/15/5-km nested domains, and
Jim Bresch's h-levels.
This script and namelist can be used as
references in running jobs in CWB IBM machine.
Obseevation decoder
Jim Bresch upadted the CWB decoder:
OBS_FGGE_PROC, see http://box.mmm.ucar.edu/individual/bresch/cwb/
Data
assimilation
WRFVar_v3 beta version:
Before the WRFVar v3.1 released,
here is a beta version of the WRFVar (revision 3439),
in which a) all the known bugs
were
fixed; b) the radiance assimilation code was included; c) some of
the WRFVar utilities were included as before,
i.e.
gen_be, tuning programs (Hollingsworth and Desroziers), and
verification programs, etc. as well as the radiance bias
correction utikities.
** Note: from now on, the obsproc
program is located under the directory: WRFDA3439/var/obsproc, do not need
to use
3DVAR_OBSPROC
anymore. This obsproc program is the most updated one, including the
ZTD processing, and
used for different applicatiopns: 3DVAR as a
default, FGAT, and 4DVAR. etc. The processed observation file
for 3DVAR is named as obs_gts_yyyy-mo-dd_hh:mm:ss.3DVAR.
For details, please read
the obsproc/README
and obsproc/README.namelist
******** VERSION
V3.1 *********
NCAR has officially released the
WRFV3.1 ( http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/wrfv3.1/updates-3.1.html
) and
WRFVar
V3.1 ( http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/wrfda/updates-3.1.html
). A User's Guide can be downloaded from
http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/users/wrfda/Docs/user_guide_V3.1/users_guide_chap6.htm
. The WRFVar_V3.1 code
(realsed
code plus minor patches) can be downloaed from WRFDAV3.1 . In this
release, except the scripts for running
gen_be,
all other scripts files can be downloaded from scripts_var for
your reference but not fully supported by us.
In addition to the changes decribed in the release UPDATES, some of the notes are stated below:
a) In obsproc:
all derived values of Pressure or Heights with
QC flags < 0 are set to the missing value of -888888.000 to avoid
these derived
values being misused in WRFVar. For CWB
observations, this will have impacts on the PILOT and METAR data.
b) In WRFVar:
Fot PILOT and Profiler data, now the vertical
interpolation is based on the reported heights, not the derived
pressure;
Because some of the pressure are missing now, the
specific humidity, q, could not be calculated beased on the relative
humidity or dew-poit temperature (in obs_gts
files), so currently the moisture data could not be assimilated for
those reports;
Now the time-window check for ingested
observations is added, so pay attention to the namelist records:
&wrfvar21 and &wrfvar22;
Bug fixed for the "bathy" data included in CWB
obs_gts files. The program will skip over this data, not "segmentation"
error.
c) CV3 BE is introduced in this
release, and the currently tuning factors as1, as2, as3, as4, and as5
were set to be (0.25, 1.0, 1.5)
for variance, horizontal and vertical scales. To
obtain the better results for user's applications (model domain
location, grid-size,
etc.), these
tuning factors must be changed based on the single observation tests.
*** UPDATE for WRFVar_V3.1 (20090507)
There are several
updates for WRFVar V3.1:
(1) Added the observation error tuning for GPSREF to var/da/da_obs/da_use_obs_errfac.inc;
(2)
Introduced the the capability of outer-loop with multiple CV5
BE tuning factors;
(3)
the scripts for verification, etc. are included under WRFDA/var.
All of the updates above should not change the results
from WRFVar.
*** UPDATE for WRFVar_V3.1 (20090820)
The changes can be found from WRFDA_changes (WRFDA_changes.doc).
*** UPDATE for WRFVar_V3.1 (20091119)
The changes can be found from WRFDA_change_20091119
( WRFDA_change_20091119.doc).
Main changes are:
(1) three additional namelist variables
are introduced:
&wrfvar2
calc_p_increment = T, (default)
update the P in wrfvar_output file; F, not update.
calc_ph_increment=T, update the
PH in wrfvar_output file; F, (default) not update.
when
you set calc_p_increment=T and calc_ph_increment=T, it is same as
previous WRFFVar.
when you set calc_p_increment=F and calc_ph_incremnet=F,
it is same as the GSI did.
&wrfvar5
gpsref_thinnig=T, vertical thinning for GPSRO;
F, (default) not thinning.
(2) incorporated Shu-Ya Chen's GPSRO work:
(QC, thinning, etc.)
(3) Inclusion of "verif_grid" code and script.
Now the verified variables are U, V, T, Q, Z, and WV (vector wind)
and
many surface paraters.
(4) make the single ob tests working correctly for pseudo (U, V, T, ..), and tpw, ztd, ref, etc. with outer-loops.
*** VERIFICATION
The wrappers for the
observation and analysis verifications can be downloaded from VERIFY_V3.1.tar.gz.
The procedure of the observation
verification is same as before. However, the verification agaisnt the
analysis is working now by using 'da_run_wrapper_verif_anal_plot.ksh',
The 6-hourly ECMWF analysis data with 25-km resolution and 91 hybrid
vertical levels are available now. I have dedoded those data for
months of June and December 2008
and interpolated to 45-km and 15-km CWB domains in wrfinput netCDF
files. From now on, this kind of
data files can be used for
verifications, especial for the impact assessment of GPSRO assimilation.
ZTD assimilation
Radiance
Data Assimilation
The radiance data assimilation can
now use the beta version of the WRFVar mentioned
above. The shell
scripts for running the Hui
Shao's testing case: SEPAT need to have minor modification, which can
be
obtained from here: SEPAT_amsua.ksh and da_run_suite_wrapper_caa1-v3.0.ksh.
Update BC
WRF
v3:
The information on WRF model part can be
found from http://box.mmm.ucar.edu/individual/bresch/cwb/
The namelist file for OP2 (WRFVar/WRF V3.0.1.1) was
modified through the detailed discussion in the
teleconference between
NCAR and CWB on 12 January 2009. Main thing is about the new 45 levels:
old,
Wei Wang
suggested, and Jim Bresch suggested. The reference namelist.input file
for WRF can be
downloaded here.
