Subject: WRFVAR release for 2005 KMA project

Dear Mi-Seon

I'm pleased to say we've successfully completed our global testing of

the WRFVAR code, which we are now making available on our web site.

This, combined with the OBSPROC software which Yong-Run will be sending

separately is the final deliverable of the KMA 2005 Project.

It combines the radiance, alpha control variable and KMA BUFR convertor

codes into a single version. You already have this code in separate

releases from us, but this combined version has integrated the three,

and as well as resolving a few bugs has a range of new features:

* Background error creation gen_be stage0 has been completely

re-written. Details in da_3dvar/doc/gen_be/gen_be.doc. We recommend you

convert to it.

* The RTTOV library is picked up externally, in a similar way to NETCDF.

Define environment variable RTTOV to point to the directory with your

RTTOV code before running configure

* Software engineering improvements to bring WRFVAR more in line with

WRF

* Can now be compiled with g95 compiler on Linux and Mac

* Your kma2netcdf changes incorporated (but not the convertor or RADAR

changes)

* New scripts to run the entire WRF system, SI, real, WRF, WRFVAR,

OBSPROC, WRF_BC for extended trial periods. See tools/run_wrf

* New script to run WRFVAR defining namelist input from environment

variables. See run/DA_Run_WRF-Var.bsh

As part of our efforts to improve code maintainability, as agreed we

have removed the following features:

* QN minimisation option

* CV options 1-3. Background errors are now either global (old

CV_options=4) and regional (old CV_options=5)

Please note this is a release for global use, consistent with the focus

of the 2005 project. We have begun testing with your new regional case,

and will report back on issues that arise. In particular we do not have

a KMA test case including Radar for regional background errors (CV=5)

The wrfvar file can be downloaded from

If you encounter any problems, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best Wishes

John Bray
