2.1 Preparation

 

Select a few papers/reports on the theory and implementation of DFI to serve as references for the WRF DFI work (Hans).

Everyone gets familiar with the DFI theory and knows the approach we are taking.

Choose a WRF version (Wei). Provide necessary support to run it.

Everyone starts familiar with from the chosen version, compiles and runs WRF, plots the results preferably using RIP.

Prepare a version of IAU and a version of Nudging (Joo-Won). Compare the WRF results with and without IAU/Nudging. (Joo-Won).

2.2 Diagnosis

 

There is almost no direct output of diagnosis from WRF run. We need them for the DFI work.

Start with the noise indicators, dps/dt and dmu/dt. Deadline March 10. (Hans).

Add other variables: total kinetic energy, precipitation, evaporation, divergence (k), latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, É (Joo-Won). The final diagnostic package should be ready by 30 April. Wei will review the code.

2.3 DFL

 

Digital Filter Launching (DFL) does not need a backward integration, but includes all other ingredients of DFI. The work should start before May (Min). Min and Hans will do the initial work. Wei will review the code.

Goal: a working version by 15 May.

2.4 Backward Integration

 

This is the most difficult task and may involve other NCAR colleagues. Wei will lead the work. Hans will share some work. Joo-Won will conduct systematic tests.

Goal: a working version by 15 May and the final version 15 June.

2.5 DFL test

 

Joo-Won will conduct systematic tests of DFL. The final version of DFL should be ready by 30 June.

2.6 ADFI

 

Code ADFI (Min and Hans). Wei will review the code.

Goal: a working version by 30 June.

2.7 DDFI

 

Code DDFI (Min and Hans). Wei will review the code.

Goal: a working version by 20 July.

2.8 Final test

 

The final tests will be carried out separately at KMA (Joo-Won) and BMB (Min). Both ADFI and DDFI should be tested. DFL may also be included. Results should be discussed regularly through emails or telephone conferences (Hans).

2.9 Coordination and report

 

A project web page will be created for the communication among KMA, BMB and NCAR participants. Progress report and memos of regular project meetings will be put on the project web page. (Hans).

The final report should include implementation details and comparison results (Hans).
