WRF-DFI project meeting – 20060905
Hans, Ju-Won, Wei Wang
Lilly room, 1:00-2:00pm, Tuesday 5 September 2006
1.
The KMA requests
The KMA want to put DFI in WRFV2.1.2.
- The version is the trial version in KMA
now.
- It may take too much time for KMA to install
a new version on CRAY.
- KMA should be able to run DFI on its Cray this
September.
2. The NCAR responses
- It is difficult to convert from current
version of DFI to WRFV2.1.2. There are many changes from WRFV2.1.2. These
changes are not part of DFI, but essential for DFI.
- The current DFI version should be closer
to WRF2.2 than to WRF2.1.2. In the coming year, we may need a small task
to upgrade DFI to 2.2.
- On the other hand, the current DFI version
differs from WRF2.1.2 mainly in coding structures, not in meteorology.
- There are three
executions for DFI: 1. Backward integration (with or without filter), 2.
Forward integration (with filter), and 3. Forecast. To run DFI, we need at
least 3 separate executables: tdfi1.exe, tdfi2.exe and fst.exe. It should
be relatively easy to replace fst.exe with wrf212.exe. (If KMA wants
consistency with early test using WRFV2.1.2, the same executable
(wrf212.exe) can be used for forecast.)
- The
released WRF should compile on the supported Cray systems (there are more
than one type of Cray system - some run Cray OS, and others run Linux). We
have been receiving changes continuously from Cray people to update
compile options. We do not exactly understand why KMA has difficulty to
install the WRF code on their system – unless code performance
tuning is involved. If KMA has difficulty installing the model on its
system, they should contact us and let us know the problems. We will work
with Cray specialists to get that resolved.
3. Work plan for this week
Hans and Wei: Check the latest code for DFI to be sent KMA.
Ju-won:
- Contact Sang-Won about testing DFI at KMA;
- Make a powerpoint to explain the weather
situation for the KMA case during May 4th ~ 11th
2006;
- Clean up results obtained at NCAR.
4. AOB
Ju-Won will return to on
Sep. 11th 2006.
We will have the next project meeting on: Thursday 7 Sep, 2 pm, Lilly room.
