WRF-DFI
project meeting 20060515
Hans, Wei,
Ju-Won
Lilly room, 2-3 pm,
Monday 15 May 2006
1. Work
review
1.1. Statistics
The work has
progressed very well. Ju-Won coded and revised the statistics package. Hans,
Wei and Min all tested it and provided comments and suggestions.
The
documentation is still needed.
Wei had comments
on some figures. The noisy patterns in the divergence tendency and the fast
oscillations in some domain-averaged quantities should be understood.
1.2. DFL
The work has
progressed very well. Min made a couple of implementations of DFL. Hans tested
the DFL code and provided comments and suggestions. Ju-Won tested the DFL code
on KMA operational domains.
Min also made a
brief document on the practical side of running DFL.
Wei reviewed the
code and would like to work with Min on revising the code. This has to wait for
MinÕs arrival.
1.3. Backward integration
Wei has
discussed the strategy with Bill S. and Tom. She also made necessary
preparations for the work. She was going to start with an idealized case.
Hans mentioned
Wei HuangÕs code for integrating the WRF adjoint model backward in time. He
also suggested Min to look into the problem as she did the MM5 DFI recently.
1.4. Summary
Most of the
tasks have been on schedule.
In addition to
the topics discussed in previous sub-sections, the following had also been done
in the project:
Hans spent
sometime to set up a project web page, which has been used as a common
reference.
Some reading and
preparation were done at the beginning of the project.
Hans and Wei did
some work before statistics and DFL.
2. Work plan for this week
Hans: complete the
meeting memo; contact Pat to add a user account for Ju-Won on BIG; provide
Ju-Won with some references on the spinup problems; help Ju-Won start DFL
experiments.
Wei: help Ju-Won set
the CONUS domain up; press on the backward integration work using the idealized
cases.
Ju-Won: get familiar
with the NCAR computing environment; write some text about the statistics
package; repeat the DFL tests on the CONUS domain and confirm the noisy pattern
in the divergence tendency fields; try to understand the strange oscillations
in some statistics.
Min: run more
experiments with different filtering strategy; start to look into the backward
integration problem; try to understand the strange oscillations in some
statistics.
3. AOB
Min could not come
to NCAR on time due to her US visa problem.
Hans agreed to write
a memo for this meeting. Ju-Won and Min will take over the memo writing from
the next meeting.
We will have regular
project meetings, start today, every second Tuesday, except for the next
meeting: Lilly room, 2 pm Tuesday 23 May.
