Abstract Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida on September 28, 2022, at a Category 4 intensity. It caused the deaths of 150 individuals, making it the deadliest in the state in nearly a century, as well as causing $112 billion in damage, making it the costliest in Florida state history and third costliest in U.S. history. Evacuation orders were issued starting two days prior to landfall and eventually spanned 29 counties and impacted over 16.1 million residents. However, the question of whether or not these orders were received and how individuals responded to them has not been explored. Responses from a longitudinal panel survey conducted by Demuth et al. provide data for the individuals who thought they were in an evacuation order. In order to verify whether or not they were correct, a database was created that compiles all of the evacuation orders in Florida. Using the survey data in conjunction with the new database, an analysis was conducted that resulted in the finding that 44% of respondents who were in evacuation orders did not know they were in evacuation orders. Knowing if people are receiving evacuation order information is important in understanding and improving risk communication during extreme weather events. This unprecedented insight could allow risk communicators to see where to focus efforts in the future to ensure the right information is getting to the right people.
