Multiphase Turbulent Flows in the Atmosphere and Ocean

NCAR's Geophysical Turbulence Program

The workshop will be held in Boulder at the Foothills Laboratory 2 Main Auditorium

Turbulent multiphase flows with solid particles, droplets, and gas bubbles are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and ocean. They represent a very important class of environmental fluid transport. Cloud droplets are central to Earth's energy balance and to the water cycle, sea sprays play an important role in hurricane dynamics and atmospheric aerosol production, air bubbles in ocean boundary layer alter acoustical and optical properties of ocean water, air-sea gas exchange, and dynamics of ocean circulation. These dispersed flows are extremely multiscale and nonlinear in nature. Available experimental, numerical, and theoretical descriptions in these applications are incomplete. Recent rapid advancements in scientific computation and fine-scale instrumentation generate exciting opportunities to incorporate more rigorous approaches into these complex flows.

Organized by NCAR's Geophysical Turbulence Program the overall goal of this workshop is to bring together world-leading experts to discuss recent progress and open research issues in the multiphase turbulent flows relevant to geophysical applications. We hope to assemble a group of researchers from various disciplines to stimulate new ideas and approaches, and to expose a number of students and junior faculty to this emerging research field.

We invite contributed talks on related topics for presentation at the workshop. Abstracts are due July 30th, 2012.
