Joint MPAS/WRF Users Workshop 2025

8:30 am – 5:00 pm MDT
05/05/2025: Register by Friday May 16 for in-person attendance
We would like to thank everyone who submitted abstracts and registered. Based on current abstract submissions and registrations, we have decided to continue with our hybrid workshop format and we will be having the in-person component at NSF NCAR’s Center Green campus. Additionally, given the constraints encountered by many organizations in our community, we have decided to have no registration fee for in-person registrants. Our funding for this meeting is, however, finite, and we are moving the in-person registration deadline forward to Friday 16 May 2025 so we can plan for meeting amenities. To summarize:
- The meeting will be hybrid - both in person and virtual.
- There is no registration fee for either in-person or virtual registrants. Already paid in-person registration fees will be fully refunded.
- The abstract submission deadline has passed.
-
The deadline for in-person attendee registration is now Friday 16 May 2025. There will be no late registrations.
-
The deadline for virtual attendee registration is Friday 30 May 2025.
We expect to have the agenda available in the next few weeks.
Again, thank you for your understanding and patience in these challenging times, and we hope to see you in person or virtually at the workshop!
04/22/2025: Extended abstract deadline and no virtual registration fee
Based on the evolving budget landscape in a number of organizations, we will not be charging any registration fee for virtual participants to this year’s meeting. Any paid virtual registration fees will be refunded. We also reiterate that there is no fee to submit an abstract for either virtual or in-person presentations.
It is the organizing committee’s intent to conduct a hybrid (in-person and virtual attendance) workshop. We are, however, aware that budget constraints may significantly impact the ability of people to attend in person. We are monitoring abstract submissions and registrations to determine if there are a sufficient number of people attending in person to justify a hybrid meeting. If there are not a sufficient number of in-person registered attendees we will conduct a virtual MPAS/WRF Users Workshop over the 3-6 June period. We are extending the abstract submission deadline to 12:00 PM (noon) MDT Monday 5 May 2025. The organizing committee intends to make the decision between a hybrid (in-person and virtual) or virtual workshop and announce that decision by the end of the day on Monday 5 May. If you can, register early so that we can have a more accurate gauge on in-person attendance. If the workshop becomes virtual, paid in-person registration fees will be fully refunded.
To summarize:
- There is no registration fee for virtual attendees to the 2025 MPAS/WRF Users Workshop.
- The deadline for submitting abstracts is 12 noon MDT Monday 5 May 2025.
- The organizing committee will be making a decision between a hybrid or entirely virtual workshop on Monday 5 May and communicating it to the community by the end of that day.
Thank you for your understanding and patience in these challenging times, and we hope to see you in person or virtually at the workshop!
03/24/2025: Additional information for attendees
We are aware of funding uncertainties and constraints in many organizations this year. We would like to emphasize that (1) there is no abstract submission fee and (2) that there is the option of virtual attendance to the workshop. There are MPAS-WRF Workshop registration fees for both the in-person and virtual options. We are aware that uncertainties in funding may result in many individuals not attending the workshop either in person or virtually. Our ultimate goal is to have everyone that wants to attend the workshop to be able to do so regardless of funding issues. We are exploring how to do this, and we will be releasing further announcements concerning workshop registrations later in April.
Workshop Overview
The Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory of NSF NCAR invites you to this year's Joint MPAS/WRF Users' Workshop from June 3 - 6, 2025. The event will take place at the NCAR|UCAR Center Green campus in Boulder, Colorado with a virtual attendance option.
The primary objectives of the workshop are for developers and the scientific community to provide updates on the MPAS and WRF modeling systems, to discuss model development and issues, and to share progress in novel applications and evaluation. This year, we are especially seeking contributions on the following topics related to MPAS/WRF.
-
Model development and updates, including improving model performance and efficiency
-
Data assimilation development and updates for global/regional applications, including assimilation of new observations
-
Model comparisons between MPAS and WRF
-
New or improved physics, physics infrastructure, and evaluation
-
Applications that include coupling to other modeling components and/or enhance operational forecasting capability
-
Applications of AI/ML methods using MPAS/WRF to improve weather prediction
Authors will be able to request either a poster or an oral presentation (note that the poster session will be entirely in-person). In addition, we will offer short tutorials on Friday related to new developments, and there will be discussion opportunities throughout the workshop on the topics of model development and infrastructures, especially as they relate to the implementation of MPAS in the Unified Forecast System (UFS). More information will be provided at a later date.
Mark your calendars! We look forward to seeing you at the workshop!
